HARBORFEST NEEDS 500 MORE OSWEGO HELPERS  by HELP 6/19/2008 at 22:47
July 24 - 27, 2008 Harborfest, Oswego, N.Y., with buskers, fireworks and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts; 315 - 343 - 6858, oswego www .harborfest. com.

So far about 100 people have volunteered to work at the festival to be held July 24 - 27 along Oswego Harbor.

"In reality, 800 volunteers would be enough to ensure that everything runs 100 percent smooth and there are no bumps in the road. But we can do a good job with 600," said Chrystal Hoyt, the volunteer coordinator.

Hoyt is hoping that many volunteers will step forward in the coming weeks.

"We’re constantly recruiting and contacting community organizations," Hoyt said.

Now in its 21st year, Harborfest draws tens of thousands people each year.

Volunteers perform a variety of services during the four - day festival including selling memorabilia and raffle tickets, providing information to festivalgoers, assisting with the festival’s trolley service and helping visitors.

All volunteers receive a shirt that identifies them as Harborfest volunteers.

With the Bridge Street bridge out of service this summer, it will be more difficult for people to get from one side of the harbor to the other.

Volunteers wearing a 2008 volunteer T - shirt also can ride for free to the festival grounds from the shuttle service parking lots at Oswego Speedway and the Romney Field House at the State University College at Oswego campus.

Volunteer applications can be found at the festival’s Web site, 123oswego harborfests or at the Harborfest office in the McCrobie Building, 41 Lake St.

Those wishing to volunteer can also call the Harborfest office at 343 - 6858.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and undergo a volunteer training class.

Harborfest needs a flood of volunteers.

With about a month to go before tens of thousands of people pour into the city of Oswego for the annual lakeside celebration, Harborfest is short about 500 volunteers.

Harborfest officials plan to eliminate River Walk West activities

Harborfest’s board of directors met recently to discuss the financial position of the festival. As a result, the board unanimously voted to eliminate activities on River Walk West.

“Despite the decision, the festival will continue to offer the high - quality entertainment we’ve prided ourselves on for the past 20 years, while continuing to keep it free to our fest - goers,” said board President Kim Cloonan.

Slated for July 24 - 27, the 2008 edition of Harborfest will feature a variety of entertainment on stages throughout the City of Oswego including, the NRG Family Stage in Washington Square Park, the Budweiser Rock Stage on East Second Street, the Veteran’s Stage on West River Walk, and the Labatt Lakeview Stage in Breitbeck Park.

Taking over for the retired Mike Redding, Braun has been involved with Harborfest for the past 10 years and executive director is just the latest position she has held.

"I was the entertainment coordinator and later on I was the business manager for the festival. Recently I was a board member of the festival so I’ve worn a lot of hats," Braun said.

This year Harborfest is going to be a little different. Many are concerned that with the Bridge Street Bridge closed there will add extra traffic concerns to an already busy area as 300,000 make their way to this year’s event. This could make getting from the east side to west side of Oswego quite a pain.

Harborfest names interim director
Harborfest has a new person in charge. The board of directors named Laurel Braun interim executive director last week. Braun replaces Mike Redding who retired in May after serving as director of the festival for eight years. Our Andy Mattison caught up with Braun on her first day to find out how she is preparing for the challenges that face Harborfest this year.

Braun acknowledges the bridge closing poses a challenge and that people should plan ahead.

"Choose where your interests lie as far as the east side and the west side and then plan accordingly," said Braun.

Braun added that there will be shuttles and maybe a water taxi to help people get around Oswego during the event. She also doesn’t see any other obstacles to the event this year and says the staff is focused on the plans already in place.

BLOG COMMENT :   Harborfest needs 500 more Oswego helpers

YOU WONT NEED THAT MANY PEOPLE, THERE WILL ONLY BE 500 PEOPLE SHOW UP!

Hmmm...

I’d have thought it a prudent decision based simply upon the fact that the Bridge Street bridge will be out of commission for a while.

At any rate, though some will be disappointed, I look forward to less traffic, etc. overall during that time.

Harborfest will definitely have a little less fest this year.

Oswego’s River Walk West park, previously used by smaller musical acts, exhibitions and other events, will not be used by the three-day festival this year.

The festival’s board of directors decided to cancel activities at the park this year to reduce expenses, said board president Kim Cloonan.

Harborfest, scheduled for July 24-27, features performances and activities on Oswego Harbor’s east and west sides.

Of course they have to take the only park set up for the children away. God forbid they take one of the drunken concert stages. This is the big problem in Oswego, there is absolutely nothing for the kids to do.
