AL LEE REFUSES TO BE A PART OF OSWEGO  by X 6/19/2008 at 22:32
New York State Board of Health has given Fulton hospital (A L Lee) an unlimited time to find another hospital to merge with. Now the drama is over and we can take a deep breath!

This is great as we have never wanted to merge with Oswego anyhow (they have always made things difficult in the past, concidered us competition rather than another organization that helps people), now he can focus on Crouse hospital to partner with and they can crush Oswego hospital and teach them a lesson in manners (help your neighbours). Initially we intended to merge with our closest neighbour (Oswego Health) but they are making too many rules and want too much of what isn’t theirs! THey think they are doing a favor and want too many favors in return, we just want to be able to server our patients in our community that have grown to rely on us, hell some of these patients I have seen coming here for generations of family members.

Well ALee hospital has over a year to figure it out so I am sure they will find the best merger for them. TOo bad that a local hospital couln’d have offered to help from the beginning, but hopspitals are a business, they do compete with each other just like any retail store outlet!

NY State is forcing the closure of Lee Hospital in Fulton to save medicaid $, according to the article. Does that presume the medicaid patients who would have gone to Lee will not go somewhere else? Or are medicaid remimbursements to Lee Hospital higher than to other hospitals?

The Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century, frequently called the Berger Commission, recommended closing, downsizing and consolidating hospitals and nursing homes throughout the state. It sought meaningful efficiencies in delivery and financing. You can find its Web site at www. nyhealthcarecommission. org

Does this make sense to anyone? I understand if they dont have the finances to provide proper care then the stat should step in and help them out, not close them down. It seems to me what the state will gain in medicare benefits will be far out weighed by the gas burned by ambulances and people driving to the nearest hospital (both oswego and syracuse are roughly a half hour away if youre driving yourself in), not to mention if theres a serious accident and lives hang in the balance that extra driving time could well be the difference between life and death. I fail to see how clsoing down a hospital benefits anyone.

The other thing I stumbled across was the recommendation to privatize the Upstate medical school The medical school used to be part of SU, but they could not afford it, and thats why the State took it over. Now the commission is saying that it should go private again. Interesting.

IN THE NEWS:

Richard Abbott, chairman of A.L. Lee Memorials board, said the Fulton hospital will not shut down June 30, as the state has ordered. He said Lee officials in the past week have contacted Syracuse hospitals, which he wouldnt name, about a possible affiliation.

We needed a plan B, he said. -- 9:20 p.m.

Oswego, NY -- Oswego Health, the parent of Oswego Hospital, has decided against pursuing an affiliation with A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton.

The decision, announced today, comes 11 days before a state-mandated deadline for A.L. Lee to shut down its emergency room and inpatient services or reach an agreement with another hospital to combine services.

In a news release, Oswego Health said the affiliation Lee proposed would jeopardize Oswego Healths financial resources and medical service capabilities, thus reducing our ability to serve more Oswego County residents than we do today.

Under a state plan to hold down Medicaid costs, A.L. Lee was told to shut down emergency and inpatient services by June 30. The hospital has resisted the mandate in court papers and testimony in Albany.
