Yes I am just as sick of slum lords as everyone else!! I have a home in what used to be a beautiful area of the west side...grand victorians, quiet neighborhoods, beautiful yards, responsible home owners. What is going on??? Where are all those responsible home owners?? These same homes have been rentals for yrs, but now no one seems to care anymore. What do we do?? Is there a light at the end of the tunnel or will I never be able sell my home and be stuck indefinately in the slums??
We have a slumlord at 671 bushwick avenue in Brooklyn.
He has not given us heat for more than a half a month. It snowed three times during this period.
He took off to Israel for a week and a half. He told no one and would not call us back.
In the time he was gone, the utilities people could not set up the hookups and we remained without heat, hot water, gas and electricity.
After the heat turned on, there was an illegal pipe in the bathroom that was not vented. The ceiling filled up with so much steam that the entire bathroom ceiling collapsed.
We had another pipe where a valve was not properly installed and it blew open since it was onlky painted over, filled our apartment up with smoke and almost ruined eveything we have.
We couldnt get in tough with him though because he was in Israel.
He has tried to make us pay for time that we had no heat. He has threatened us and told us we could leave and if I could afford it, I would!
I looked up the housing authority, who came on christmas day, and we did not have heat. They did not come in, they barely asked any questions and said that he may get a fine. To our knowledge he never did. Apparently to retrieve our money through small claims court, we have to have a minimum amount to file a claim. It seems as though rentals are slanted to their favor.
So, I am warning everyone, do not rent an apartment at 671 bushwick avenue, its not worth it!
